New Political Humor/Satire Presentation

The latest addition to my comedy presentations is Political Humor/Satire ranging from Will Rogers to Mort Sahl to SNL to several political satire shows – and dozens of comedians in between. Considering the current state of our Presidential primaries, this is a timely topic and is very much in demand.

Upcoming Shows

I have an exciting week ahead. On Sunday Feb 21, I will again be hosting the radio show “Home Made Music” which broadcasts from 9:00 to 11:00 AM on 88.7 FM (if you are in Central NJ) and also on the internet at: http://radio.rutgers.edu/

I have been the substitute DJ for this show for more than 30 years and I never tire of coming up with new themes and a mix of old and new songs/artists.

On Monday Feb. 22, I will be giving a presentation on 20th Century Comedians to the Middlesex Chapter of Brandeis. It will take place at the South River Public Library.

On the following Sunday (Feb. 28), I will be giving a presentation on “Jewish Folk Singers.” It will take place at Temple Bnai Shalom on Fern Road in East Brunswick at 11:30 AM. This is a free event that is open to all.

PBS Documentary about Carole King

For those of you who enjoy the music of Carole King, and who enjoyed the show “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”, I encourage you to watch the show “Carole King: Natural Woman” which just aired on PBS (February 19, 2016). The Broadway show was great but stopped just as she hit her most significant success. This mini documentary tells the whole story and will fill in much of the needed details to fully understand the woman, and her music. I’m sure, like most PBS shows, it will air many times in the future. Catch it if you can – it is well worth the brief hour it takes.

Recently honored with a prestigious teaching excellence award

The Advisory Council for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Rutgers University (OLLI-RU) just advised me that I have been awarded the Marlene M. Pomper Award for Teaching Excellence. Marlene set a very high standard and I am honored to have been chosen by the students at OLLI-RU for this recognition.

Hosting “Home Made Music” Once Again

I will again be hosting the folk music radio show “Home Made Music” this Sunday, September 20. As always, I play music related to a theme – this week’s will be a combination of September/Autumn and Streets. While that may sound like a strange mix, it is because I have the privilege to bring to the studio a great new bluegrass/string band by the name of Magnolia Street. They will be playing live not only on the air, but about 11:30 AM in Highland Park, NJ as part of their 11th annual Arts in the Park street festival. Live music and other entertainment, food from local restaurants, an art show, and arts and crafts sale in downtown Highland Park, along Raritan Avenue.

Magnolia Stree5t is a group of seasoned professionals who will shortly be cutting their first CD as a group, though several have appeared on prior recordings.

The show airs on Sunday between 9 and 11 AM EDT on WRSU which is 88.7 on your FM dial in Central New Jersey and on the internet at: http://radio.rutgers.edu/

Martin Short’s Memoir

In my quest to further build my knowledge about 20th century comedians, I just completed reading Martin Short’s memoir entitled “I Must Say: My Life As a Humble Comedy Legend.” While I like some of his work, I was never a huge fan of some of his “shtick.” That said, I found the book to be just as the dust cover described – engagingly witty, wise and heartfelt. It also humanized a person very much like all of us who has made it “big.” His challenges, successes and defeats (some of which were his own causing), gives you a better understanding of the hardships one must endure to make it to the top. But it also gave me a far greater appreciation for Martin Short the man – not just the comedian. It is well worth your perusal.

Sharing the Microphone Sunday Evening Aug. 16 on Music You Can’t Hear On The Radio

Sunday evening August 16, I have the great pleasure of sharing the microphone on central New Jersey’s longest running “folk” radio program “Music You Can’t Hear On The Radio – 103.3 FM and at http://wprb.com/

I will be introducing the very talented young singer/songwriter Owen Danoff. In addition to his CD “Twelve Stories,” yesterday he released a new single, “No Such Thing” which is now available online – and which I hope we can get him to play for us on the air live. This is the song that won first place in the American Songwriter Lyric Writing Contest earlier this year.

Owen comes from a long pedigree of accomplished singer/songwriters but has carved out a niche that is all his own.

I hope you can join us this Sunday, between 7:30 and 8:15 PM on WPRB.

Bringing Falcon Ridge Folk Festival to You

Brother SunI had the pleasure of seeing Brother Sun in an outdoor concert in Woodbridge NJ last night – accompanied by great weather and nearly a full moon. They will be appearing at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival this week-end along with such greats as Judy Collins, Susan Werner, Garnet Rogers, Ellis and dozens more. For those of you who cannot make the festival, I will be doing 2 hours of their music on this Sunday’s Home Made Music radio show – So if you can’t get there, I can bring part of it to you – Sunday, Aug.2 on WRSU 88.7 FM or WRSU Radio Link
